About Us

Rimbey & District Victim Services is a non-profit, police based community agency.  We are part of the Alberta Police Based Victim Services Association.

We work alongside the Rimbey RCMP to provide information, support, and referrals to residents of the area who have been affected by crime or tragedy. We have trained Advocates and Staff who provide emotional suppo
rt, practical assistance and referrals to victims of crime and trauma.

The majority of our referrals come from the Rimbey & District RCMP, but we do take referrals from other community agencies and from victims directly.

Our Staff and Advocates may be asked to come to the victim's residence, the Victim Services office, a crime scene or the local hospital.

Victim Services acts as an information point for victims about the status of the police investigation and the court case.  We offer information about the criminal justice proceedings and court preparation.  We can accompany victims to court.

We provide information that is covered by provincial legislation. including Victim Impact Statements, the Financial Benefits Program and Restitution.

We have adopted the Basic Principles of Justice for Victims of Crime, based on the United Nations Declaration, and act in accordance to the principles outlined in section 2(1) of the Victims of Crime Act.

Goals

Victim Services aims to:
  • Lessen the impact of a crime or traumatic event on victims.
  • Focus on the prevention of further victimization and provide encouragement to victims.
  • Help increase "availability time" of the RCMP members so they can attend to other emergencies.
  • Be of service to investigators by providing assistance to the victim during the investigation.
  • Help promote public awareness of the program by participating in the community with various groups, individuals and agencies.
  • Host educational events to increase awareness and prevention.

Canadian Victims Bill of Rights

Did you know that Canada has a Canadian Victims Bill of Rights Act?  It sets out the rights of victims throughout the criminal justice system.

Briefly, every victim has the:
  • Right to information
  • Right to protection
  • Right to participation
Victims who feel that their rights have been breached by a federal department, agency or body can file a complaint through its complaints process.
